How to Hire a Surveillance Investigator

In short: hire a surveillance investigator who holds a Florida license, works as a team and not one person in a car, delivers a dated written report with photo and video, follows Florida recording and tracking laws, and tells you up front how the work is billed.

When we tell people what Crossroads does, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is surveillance. While we offer many other services to our clients like asset searches and deep research, surveillance is indeed one of our primary service offerings.

What differentiates Crossroads Investigations?

 • We are not a guy and a car. We are an agency that offers wide availability throughout South Florida. That means we’re more likely to be ready to deploy when you give the green light.

 • We have a surveillance coordinator who will hold your hand and keep you informed throughout the case.

 • Our field investigators are experienced professionals. We turn down applicants to join our field team every week because they don’t meet our high standards.

 • No hidden fees – we don’t charge extra for travel time, report writing or photos and videos.

 • We keep you out of trouble – we stay on top of the local laws prohibiting the use of GPS trackers (unless you own the vehicle) and we don’t include audio in our recordings (since Florida is a two-party consent state). When you get to court, the last thing you need is a mistake by your investigator to harm your case.

 • Our reputation – ask around town – for over 25 years, we have been conducting investigations throughout South Florida and are quite proud of our reputation.

What to Look For in a Surveillance Investigator

 • A Florida license. Ask for the license number and look it up on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services license search. Anyone who cannot give you a number is not someone to hire.
 • A team. Most of our assignments use one or two investigators. Longer or larger cases add surveillants so no one person works a long shift alone, loses the subject in traffic or gets noticed.
 • A written report. You should get a dated log of what was observed and time-stamped photo and video, not a phone call and a promise.
 • Legal methods. Surveillance is done from public places. Florida is a two-party consent state, so we do not include audio in recordings, and GPS trackers are only used on vehicles you own. A mistake here can hurt your case in court.
 • Clear billing. We do not charge extra for travel time, report writing or media uploads. Pricing is on our rates page (/rates/).
 • A report your attorney can use. If a lawyer is involved, the report should be written so it can be handed to counsel as is.

What Your Surveillance Report Includes

A written report of the activity observed, with a dated log of observations and time-stamped photo and video media from the assignment. We do not charge for travel time, report writing or media uploads.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

 1. Are you licensed in Florida, and what is your license number?
 2. How many investigators will work my assignment, and who coordinates it?
 3. What will I receive when it is done?
 4. How is the work billed, and are travel time and report writing included?
 5. Do you record audio or use GPS trackers? (Florida law limits both.)
 6. Can you work with my attorney?

Who do you want to have followed?

 • Your spouse or significant other?
 • An ex-employee you suspect of violating a non-compete agreement?
 • The parent of your child to check on your child’s welfare?
